FAQ
There are multiple ways for you to vote for THE X FACTOR™: (1) Toll-free Voting; (2) Verizon SMS/Text Message Voting (for Verizon subscribers only); (3) Online Voting at www.TheXFactorUSA.com; (4) Twitter Direct Message Voting at http://twitter.thexfactorusa.com; and (5) Verizon Touch Voting via The Xtra Factor™ App (for Verizon subscribers only. Exclusive on Android Devices), as described below:

(1) Toll-free Voting: Each act (“Act”) will be assigned their own toll-free number during the performance show each Wednesday (except Thanksgiving week when the performance show will air Tuesday November 22nd). To vote, simply watch THE X FACTOR™ on FOX each week (see local listings for dates/times in your area) and dial the telephone number of the Act for whom you wish to vote.

(2) Verizon SMS/Text Voting: Each Act will be assigned their own SMS/text message short code number during each performance show. Verizon subscribers only may text the word ‘VOTE’ to the 4 digit short code numbers promoted for each Act. Only send the word ‘VOTE’ to the 4 digit short code numbers you see on screen, as you cannot send a text message with the word ‘VOTE’ to the toll-free numbers or to Twitter.

(3) Online Voting: If you have a Facebook account you can vote online at www.TheXFactorUSA.com.

(4) Twitter Direct Message Voting: Go to http://twitter.thexfactorusa.com and follow the instructions for how to Direct Message your Twitter vote(s). Or, if you have a Twitter account and are following @TheXFactorUSA, you can vote by sending a Direct Message (Tweets will not count as votes, only Direct Messages) containing the number of the Act for whom you wish to vote. First sign into Twitter, or sign up for an account here. Second, follow @TheXFactorUSA by clicking on the Follow button on their Profile page. Click on the Message function on Twitter.com or on your phone, address the Direct Message to @TheXFactorUSA, and add the number of the Act for whom you wish to vote. The number assigned to each Act is based on order in the performance show each week, much like the toll-free and SMS voting. For example, if you wish to vote for Act 1, send a Twitter Direct Message containing the number 1 to @TheXFactorUSA. To learn more about how to vote via Direct Message on Twitter, go here.

(5) Verizon Touch Voting via The Xtra Factor™ App: If you are a Verizon subscriber with an Android Smartphone, then you can vote via The Xtra Factor™ App. Simply download the App from the Android Marketplace, then follow the voting instructions found with-in the app. Your vote via The Xtra Factor™ App on Smartphones will be submitted using SMS/text message. Please note, the short codes and keywords for the Acts shown in The Xtra Factor™ App will be different to those shown on air, although your vote(s) will still count in the same way, and the vote windows (see below) will be the same. If you are a Verizon subscriber with an Android tablet, you can also vote via The Xtra Factor™ App by logging into a Facebook account. If your tablet is using a wi-fi connection, you must enter your Verizon Wireless mobile phone number when prompted to authenticate as a Verizon subscriber.

The voting window for all methods will open at the end of each performance show and you will have at least 2 hours to cast your votes. Online and Twitter Voting methods are each limited to 50 votes per account User ID, per performance show.

Rules and procedures are subject to change at producers’ discretion without notice.

(1) Toll-free Voting: Toll-free Voting opens at the end of the performance show (see local listings for dates/times in your area) and stays open for 2 hours after the show, subject to time zone restrictions. Your vote window is based on the geographic location of the area code of your phone (for example, an East Coast area code will only be able to vote for 2 hours after the East Coast broadcast). Outside of these times, the toll-free lines will play a busy signal and your call will not count as a vote.

(2) Verizon SMS/Text Voting: Text Voting opens at the end of the performance show (see local listings for dates/times in your area) and stays open for 2 hours after the show, subject to time zone restrictions. Your vote window is based on the geographic location of the area code of your phone (for example, an East Coast area code will only be able to vote for 2 hours after the East Coast broadcast). If you try to vote via SMS outside of the vote window, you will get one ‘voting not open’ message and your vote will not count, although message and data rates may apply to all messages sent and received.

(3) Online Voting: Online Voting opens at the end of the East Coast broadcast of the performance show (see local listings for dates/times) and closes 2 hours after the Hawaii broadcast. If you try to vote outside of the vote window you will get a ‘voting closed’ page.

(4) Twitter Direct Message Voting: Twitter Voting opens at the end of the East Coast broadcast of the performance show (see local listings for dates/times) and closes 2 hours after the Hawaii broadcast. If you try to vote outside of the vote window you will still be able to submit your Direct Message but it will be ignored and will not count as a vote.

(5) Verizon Touch Voting via The Xtra Factor™ App: Voting via Verizon Android ‘tablet’ devices will open at the end of the East Coast broadcast of the performance show (see local listings for dates/times) and closes 2 hours after the Hawaii broadcast. If you try to vote outside of the vote window you will get a ‘voting closed’ page. Voting via Verizon Android Smartphones opens at the end of the performance show (see local listings for dates/times in your area) and stays open for 2 hours after the show, subject to time zone restrictions. The Verizon Android Smartphone vote window is based on the geographic location of the area code of your phone (for example, an East Coast area code will only be able to vote for 2 hours after the East Coast broadcast). If you try to vote via Verizon Android Smartphone outside of the vote window, you will get one ‘voting not open’ text message and your vote will not count, although message and data rates may apply to all messages sent and received.
(1) Toll-free Voting: Telephone calls to THE X FACTOR™ voting lines are toll-free. If you use a mobile phone to call, calling plan minutes will be used or deducted according to terms of your carrier’s calling plan. Note, if you reach a number which asks you to enter credit card information, you have misdialed and reached a service not connected with THE X FACTOR™ so you should hang up, check the correct number and dial again.

(2) Verizon SMS/Text Voting: If you vote using Verizon SMS/Text Voting then message and data rates may apply for all messages sent and received.

(3) Online Voting: Online Voting is free except for your standard internet access charges or data charges if you are using a web browser on your mobile device.

(4) Twitter Direct Message Voting: Twitter Voting is free except for your standard internet access charges or data charges if you are using a web browser on your mobile phone, or SMS charges if you receive messages to your phone phone from Twitter.

(5) Verizon Touch Voting via The Xtra Factor™ App: Voting via Verizon Android ‘tablet’ devices is free except for your standard internet access charges or data charges. If you vote using Verizon Android Smartphones then message and data rates may apply for all messages/data sent and received.
(1) Toll-free Voting: You may vote as often as you like via toll-free.

(2) Verizon SMS/Text Voting: You may vote as often as you like via Verizon SMS/Text Voting.

(3) Online Voting: You may vote up to 50 times per account User ID per performance show via Online Voting.

(4) Twitter Direct Message Voting: You may vote up to 50 times per Twitter account User ID per performance show via Twitter Direct Message Voting.

(5) Verizon Touch Voting via The Xtra Factor™ App: You may vote up to 50 times per account User ID per performance show when voting via a Verizon Android ‘tablet’ device. You may vote as often as you like via a Verizon Android Smartphone.
(1) Toll-free Voting: If you are calling the toll-free numbers to cast your vote, your vote will count if you hear the ‘thanks for voting’ message.

(2) Verizon SMS/Text Voting: If you are voting by the Verizon SMS/Text Voting method, your vote(s) will count if you receive a ‘thanks for voting’ confirmation message per Act voted for. This message may take some time to be received. Your text vote was not sent successfully if your handset reads ‘message not sent.’ You will receive only one ‘thanks for voting’ text confirmation message for each valid vote per Act during a voting period, regardless of how many times you vote.

(3) Online Voting: If you are voting online at www.TheXFactorUSA.com using a Facebook account, you will receive a ‘thanks for voting’ confirmation message page after each vote. However, please note that if you vote online only your first 50 votes will count. After your 50th vote, no further votes will count for that performance show even though you will continue to see the ‘thanks for voting’ page.

(4) Twitter Direct Message Voting: If you are voting by Twitter you will receive one ‘thanks for voting’ direct message back, regardless of how many times you vote or how many Acts you vote for.

(5) Verizon Touch Voting via The Xtra Factor™ App: If you are voting using a Verizon Android ‘tablet’ device you will receive a ‘thanks for voting’ confirmation message page after each vote. If you are experiencing trouble with any of the voting methods, remember that you can always try another voting method.
The performance/voting shows will air on FOX each week (see your local listings for show dates and times) and the results will be broadcast the night after the performance show on FOX. So, make sure you don’t miss the results show if you want to see how your vote affected the results!
THE X FACTOR™ voting process is administered and carefully monitored by an independent vote management company. The producers, in consultation with this independent vote management company, reserve the right to remove votes that are identified as having been cast in such a significant block, either by technical enhancements or otherwise, that it could unfairly influence the outcome of the voting. Procedures apply to all vote methods.
All lines for THE X FACTOR™ are tested before going live to make sure the lines work properly and are playing out the correct audio. If you call and hear the wrong Act number, it’s possible you accidentally misdialed, so check the number and dial again.
Toll-free voting begins at the end of the show when ALL of the Acts have performed - if you call before then, you will hear a busy signal and your vote will NOT count.

At the end of the performance show each week, voting can begin and phone lines will be opened. Voting lasts for 2 hours after the show, subject to local time zone restrictions, and during that time you will hear a message thanking you for voting for your chosen Act. Each Act will have its own number read/shown on air, and the phone message will confirm the Act number for whom you have voted. After the voting window closes, no more votes will be accepted and lines will again play out a busy signal.

After voting via a toll-free vote number, a portion of callers from wireless phones may hear a message offering an opt in to THE X FACTOR™ Text Club to periodically receive THE X FACTOR™ related messages directly to your phone. To opt in, press 1 when prompted. If you do not wish to opt in then you can hang up at any time. Your vote submission will not be impacted. Message and data rates may apply if you opt in. For more information on THE X FACTOR™ Text Club go to www.TheXFactorUSA.com/mobileterms

To opt in, reply with the word ‘YES’. If you do not wish to opt in simply ignore the message. Your vote submission will not be impacted. NEVER call a "900" number or provide your credit card in relation to voting for THE X FACTOR™. If you call to vote for your favorite THE X FACTOR™ Act and hear a message to call a "900" number, or if you hear anything relating to a chat service which asks you to enter credit card details, you have misdialed as neither the 900 service nor the chat service are in any way connected with THE X FACTOR™. Do NOT call this "900" number to vote for THE X FACTOR™ and do not enter any credit card details if prompted as voting on THE X FACTOR™ is free of charge. Please try THE X FACTOR™ toll-free numbers again, dialing carefully. Please see the How much does it cost to vote? question for more cost information on by vote method.
Although the telephone network is designed to handle huge volumes of calls simultaneously, there may be times (particularly just after the show) when it will not be able to handle every single call due to the sheer volume. If you are calling during your voting window but can’t get through to cast your vote, be patient and try again later. You may also try another voting method if you cannot get through to the toll-free lines.

When your voting window closes, lines will switch from a ‘thank you for voting’ message to a busy signal. If you are sure you are calling within your voting window but still can’t get through (either getting a busy signal, a fast busy or an error such as ‘your call cannot be completed as dialed’), it may be that your local phone company has been flooded with calls. Try waiting a few minutes before calling again. If you still have problems, contact your local phone company. Remember, that you can always try another voting method.

If you are calling from a cell phone with an area code that is in a different time zone from that in which you are calling, the voting system will accept or reject your vote based on the time zone of your cell phone’s area code. So, for example, if you have a New York cell phone area code but are calling from Los Angeles after the West Coast broadcast, you will be voting outside the East Coast voting window and your vote will not be accepted. Try calling again from a landline phone during the West Coast vote window or use another method to vote. You may also experience issues with voting during your correct post-show vote window if you are using a digital phone service which routes your calls through a different region. For more information see the Can I vote if I subscribe to a digital phone service or VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) service? question. Remember, that you can always try another voting method.
Yes, you can vote if you subscribe to some digital or internet based phone systems, such as Vonage or Skype. However, note that digital phone and VOIP services often re-route outgoing calls to a different geographical location from which the call is being made. As a result, you may only be able to vote in the voting window to which your call has been re-routed. If you are trying to vote in the regular voting window for your region and your call is re-routed outside of your region by your service provider, you will not be able to vote (instead, you will hear a busy signal). However, you still have the availability to vote during the other voting window or using the other vote methods. For further information, contact your digital phone or VOIP service provider.
No, this is not true. As part of the process to ensure that THE X FACTOR™ voting system is accurate and ready for the public to call and vote, a test window is built into the toll-free system. During this test window, anyone calling the toll-free numbers from a phone with a West Coast area code will hear the 'thanks for voting...' message. This vote window is for testing purposes only and any calls received during this time do not count as valid votes. Your toll-free votes will only count if you call during your valid 2 hour vote window after the show, subject to time zone limitations.
Yes, you can call the toll-free numbers from your mobile phone but calling plan minutes will be used or deducted according to terms of your carrier’s calling plan. Contact your cell phone service provider if you want to know how much you will be charged. Additionally, if you vote using Verizon SMS, message and data rates may apply – see the How Much Does It Cost To Vote? question for more details. Only send the word 'VOTE' to the 4 digit short code numbers you see on screen, you cannot send a text message to the toll-free numbers.

If you are calling from a cell phone or using the Verizon SMS/Text Voting and you are in a different time zone from your cell phone number, the voting systems will accept or reject your vote based on the time zone of your cell phone area code. For example, if you have a New York cell phone area code but are calling from Los Angeles after the West Coast broadcast, you will be voting outside the East Coast voting window and your vote will not be accepted. Try calling again from a landline telephone during the West Coast voting window or use another vote method.

Other voting methods that may be available on your cell phone include Online Voting (if you have a compatible device), Twitter and Verizon Touch Voting via The Xtra Factor™ App (Android Smartphone devices).
SMS text messaging is a way of communicating short text messages via your mobile phone. Most (but not all) handsets have this feature. For THE X FACTOR™ only Verizon subscribers can vote by SMS/text message. To vote, create a new message, input the word ‘VOTE’ in the message field and send it to the 4 digit short code relating to the Act for whom you wish to vote. This 4 digit short code number, such as 9301, relates directly to your Act of choice and will be displayed on the show. Only send the word 'VOTE' to the 4 digit short code numbers you see on screen as you cannot send an SMS to the toll-free numbers.
As with the toll-free voting, each Act will also be assigned their own Verizon SMS number during the show – this 4 digit short code number will appear on your TV screen alongside the toll-free phone numbers. To vote by SMS if you are a Verizon subscriber, simply watch THE X FACTOR™ on FOX each week, input the word ‘VOTE’ into a new text message on your cell phone and send this message to the 4 digit short code number assigned to your Act of choice (such as 9301 for Act 1). Only send the word 'VOTE' to the 4 digit short code numbers you see on screen, you cannot send an SMS text message to the toll-free numbers. If done correctly, you will receive one ‘thanks for voting’ message per Act voted for during the valid vote window, regardless of how many votes you cast.

Verizon SMS/Text Voting will open at the end of each performance show and stay open for 2 hours after the show, subject to local time zone limitations. Voting will NOT be open during the show or outside the two hour time period determined by the area code on your mobile phone. Votes sent outside of the voting window will be invalid, and you will receive one message saying the window is closed. If you are sending your SMS vote from a mobile phone with an area code that is in a different time zone from that in which you are texting, the network will accept or reject your vote based on the time zone of your telephone area code. So, if you have a New York mobile phone area code but are voting from Los Angeles during the West Coast voting window, your vote will not be accepted.
The design of the Verizon SMS voting is exactly the same as the toll-free voting system in terms of open/close times and regions. The Act numbers will also be very similar. If you wish to vote for Act 2, for example, you can either call 1 855 THE XF 02 (1 855 843 9302) or Verizon subscribers can text the word VOTE to 9302. Please make sure you watch the show each week to find out the numbers assigned to each Act, as they will be assigned a different number each week. Only send the word 'VOTE' to the 4 digit short code numbers you see on screen, you cannot send an SMS/text message to the toll-free numbers.
SMS/Text Voting is only available to Verizon subscribers with two-way SMS text messaging capable handsets. If you are a Verizon customer and wish to check if your handset has two-way SMS text messaging capability, go to www.VerizonWireless.com or visit a Verizon store. Verizon subscribers with area codes from within the Continental US, Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands can cast their text vote for THE X FACTOR™. If you are not a Verizon subscriber, you can vote using the standard toll-free phone numbers, online at www.TheXFactorUSA.com using a Facebook account or via Twitter at http://twitter.thexfactorusa.com using a Twitter account.
Verizon SMS/Text Voting for THE X FACTOR™ opens after the performance show each week, and will stay open for 2 hours after the show, subject to local time zone limitations. Votes cast outside of this voting window will be invalid. Only send the word 'VOTE' to the 4 digit short code numbers you see on screen, you cannot send a text message to the toll-free numbers.
If you are a Verizon subscriber with an Android Smartphone you can SMS/text your vote(s) via The Xtra Factor App. When you select the Act you want to vote for from the pictures displayed in the App, it will open up the SMS client on your phone and the short code and the keyword (i.e. Act name) will automatically be pre-populated to match your selection. Then all you need to do is press the ‘send’ button. The pre-populated short code and keyword information will be different to those shown on air only for vote tracking purposes, so your votes will still count in the same way, and the vote windows will be the same.
The cost of SMS voting for Verizon subscribers varies depending on your data calling or messaging plan. If you do not have a Verizon text message bundle package, message and data rates will apply to all messages sent and received. Verizon Wireless charges are up to 20 cents per domestic text sent and received. If you subscribe to aVerizon Wireless TXT Messaging plan, usage will be deducted from the plan’s allowance; excess usage will be billed at 10 cents per text message sent and received. You will be charged for each message sent from and received by your wireless device, regardless of delivery and including invalid votes cast outside of the specified vote window. Please note that ‘premium’ rates do not apply for THE X FACTOR™ SMS/text voting. This also relates to voting on The Xtra Factor App via an Android Smartphone device. Message and data rates may apply for the download and use of the App.
Like the toll-free voting, the Verizon SMS network is designed to handle huge volumes of votes simultaneously. There may be times (particularly just after a performance show) when it will not be able to handle every message due to network congestion. When this happens, ‘message not sent’ may appear on your handset. Please be patient and try again later. And, don’t forget to vote within your time zone’s voting window! If you are not a Verizon subscriber, you will not be able to text your vote for THE X FACTOR™, but you can still use any of the other voting methods.
After you vote by Verizon SMS/Text, you may receive other messages relating to THE X FACTOR™. These messages will only relate to THE X FACTOR™ and will include content such as links to download The Xtra Factor™ App. To opt out of receiving these messages simply reply with the word ‘STOP’.

You may be sent a message from the short code 5301 asking if you wish to opt in to THE X FACTOR™ Vote Number Reminder service. If you opt in by replying ‘JOIN’ you will then receive messages each week after the performance show which list the vote numbers for each Act. That way, if you have forgotten the voting short code details, you can still send your votes by Verizon SMS/Text Voting. You can opt out at any time by replying with the word ‘STOP’. Message and data rates may apply for any messages sent and received.

You may also be sent a message from the short code 21523 asking if you wish to opt in to THE X FACTOR™ Text Club to periodically receive THE X FACTOR™ related messages directly to your phone. To opt in, reply with the word ‘JOIN’. If you do not wish to opt in simply ignore the message. Your vote submission will not be impacted. If you subscribe and then wish to opt you, reply with the word ‘STOP’. Message and data rates may apply for any messages sent and received. For more information on THE X FACTOR™ Text Club go to www.TheXFactorUSA.com/mobileterms.
Online Voting is available to Facebook account holders. Simply go to www.TheXFactorUSA.com and follow the links to vote. During the vote window, which starts after each performance show and ends 2 hours after the Hawaii broadcast, you will see a ‘vote’ button. When you click on the ‘vote’ button you will be directed to a Facebook login page where you will need to enter your e-mail address and password to log in (if you are not already logged in). If you do not have a Facebook account you will not be able to vote online (but you can still vote via toll-free and if you are a Verizon subscriber you can also vote via Verizon SMS/Text, or Twitter Direct Message). Once you successfully log on to Facebook and accept the application setting (if you do not accept, you will not be able to vote online) you will be prompted to select the Act for whom you want to vote and complete a ‘CAPTCHA’ and click ‘vote’. A CAPTCHA is a security measure which requires you to enter the scrambled letters/numbers you see on your screen. If you do not correctly enter the CAPTCHA information you will be prompted to try again. If you successfully submit your vote, you will receive a page which thanks you for your vote, asks you if you want to post your vote to your Facebook page and if you want to vote again. Note, you are not required to post to your Facebook page, this is just an optional feature offered and is only offered the first time you vote for an Act each week. If you vote online, you may vote up to 50 times per performance show per account User ID. Any additional votes you cast or attempt to cast above this limit will NOT count. If you are experiencing trouble with any of the vote, remember that you can always try another voting method.
Logging into your Facebook account is a key security feature to guard against voting fraud.
To vote online, you must have a Facebook account, have javascript enabled, have cookies enabled and you must not remove the voting App from your list of apps on the Facebook side.
Although the Internet can handle huge volumes of vote submissions simultaneously, there may be times (particularly just after the show) when your local service provider may not be able to handle every attempt due to the sheer volume. If you are trying to vote during the vote window but it isn’t processing your attempt, be patient and try again later or you can always vote via another vote method.
Twitter voting is available to Twitter account holders. You will need to follow @TheXFactorUSA and then you can vote by sending a Direct Message (Tweets will not count as votes, only Direct Messages) containing the Act number for whom you wish to vote. Act numbers are assigned based on order in the performance show each week, much like the toll-free and SMS/Text Voting. For example, if you wish to vote for Act 1 send a Direct Message containing the number 1 to @TheXFactorUSA. Or, you can go to http://twitter.thexfactorusa.com and follow the instructions for how to Direct Message your Twitter vote(s). You will receive just one ‘thanks for voting’ Direct Message from @TheXFactorUSA regardless of how many times you vote by Twitter.

If you vote via Twitter, you may vote up to 50 times per account User ID per performance show. Any additional votes you cast or attempt to cast above this limit will NOT count.

If you are experiencing trouble with any of the vote methods, remember that you can always try another voting method.
Twitter provides support for users experiencing any kind of issue with the platform. You can follow @support for the latest updates, and also send a Direct Message to @support describing the issue if you're having problemsRemember, you can always vote via another vote method.
