It was a night of good news/bad news before moving onto the next round: Judges' Homes. Here's how the first part of the night rolled out....
Young Adults: This category was hands down the most tearful of them all. CeCe Frey was the very first act to make it through and through she went with her hands on her tear-stained face. Willie Jones got the good news next and ran down the stage in glee. Jennel Garcia also messed up her makeup as she got her green light. Flash to Paige Thomas who is crying just waiting for her name to be called. Nick Youngerman's called next, then finally Paige Thomas (who now has black mascara dripping down her cheek), followed by the final yes of the group: a wet-faced Jillian Jensen who hugs her BFF Jennel. Flash to Ally Brooke who hiccupped her way through tears after being left on the stage in pack of "no's"." "I guess I just wasn't what they were looking for," she sobbed. We'll soon find out that she guessed wrong!
Over 25s: The eldest acts of the bunch were on the chopping block next and went a bit quicker. Jason Brock jumped for joy when he was the first name called. David Correy took a knee and sobbed to the judges, "I won't let you all down. I promise you." Daryl Black, Tara Simon, and Tate Stevens got emotional on their yeses, and the final spot went to Vino Alan - no walls to punch this time, Mr. Tough Guy! Tate Stevens' post-yes reaction? "Man, oh my, ummm," he said, thrilled. Britney Spears had a tough time saying goodbye to the rest. "It really sucks," she said after letting the rest of the Over 25s go. Freddie Combs isn't discouraged by his loss. "I'll be singing until I draw my last breath," he vowed. Jeffrey Adam Gutt commented, "It's their loss. I could've won this show. I feel bad for my son. It's going to be hard to tell him," he said.
Groups: With little to choose from, only three groups made it through to Judges' Homes. Sister C, Dope Crisis, and Emblem3. The rest went home sad-faced. A member of a girl group that didn't make it screamed, "We were the only group that didn't forget a word!" Moving on...
Teens: Last, but certainly not least, the youngest bunch of the season, the Teens! Beatrice Miller was the lucky little lady to get the good news first. She dropped to her knees in tears. Little James Tanner came out sporting some sunglasses inside. WHAT?! He wasn't too cool for the judges, as he got the second yes. Carly Rose Sonenclar was crying at the get-go but she was put out of her misery early as the third to get the big y-e-s. Diamond White actually looked surprised when she was told she's one of the Teens and blew kisses to the judges. The last two spots went to Reed Deming and Arin Ray. This time last year, Arin got a big ol' no as a solo artist, but then was put into the group InTENsity. He's stoked to finally get a chance on his own. The rest left on the stage were, you guessed it, in T-E-A-R-S! This, of course, left Demi all wet-faced as well, saying, "I remember being like one of those girls."
"So that's it...well...almost," said Britney.
Now this is the fun part! The main cuts are over. The bulk of the four categories are all filled up. But, clearly, there were only three Groups put through, and there needs category is missing something. The judges felt there was too much talent to lose, so they put together the most talented contestants into three new groups.
The following sad faces were called back onto the big stage: ONE4FIVE, Lyric Da Queen, Josh Metzler, Owen Stuart, Austin Corini, Brandon Hassan, Johnny Maxwell, Dinah Jane Hansen, Lauren Jauregui, Ally Brooke, Normani Hamilton, and Camila Cabello.
Simon moved them around a bit like pieces of a chess game and then announced, "What do we have here? You are all as you are invited to the judges' Homes."
The kids all scream! And, the newly formed groups are:
LYRIC 145 featuring ONE4FIVE and Lyric Da Queen.
Playback featuring Josh Metzler, Owen Stuart, Austin Corini, Brandon Hassan, and Johnny Maxwell.
LYLAS featuring Dinah Jane Hansen, Lauren Jauregui, Ally Brooke, Normani Hamilton, and Camila Cabello.
