Check out the Q&A session with Mr. L.A. Reid:
Now that Auditions are over, do you have any favorites?
You know what's interesting this year? I have many, many favorites; too many to name. Just watching the show, doing the auditions, we see so many that, honestly, it gets very confusing in my head. Watching the show and watching the contestants, watching the playbacks, so many of them are so good; that I think the competition in Boot Camp is going to be so stiff. I can't predict the outcome because there's so much good talent this year.
Have you changed your approach to judging between Season 1 and Season 2?
Yeah, Season 1, I was way too friendly, and then Season 2 I ended up even nicer. So, if I'm around for Season 3 I'm gonna turn into a real mean guy because I don't like this nice version of myself. [Laughs] I'm one of those guys that really despises nice people. [Laughs] I don't like seeing myself in the nice mode. I wanna be mean! I like Simon because he's always mean. I like Britney because she's mean. And this year feels like me and Demi are like the nice people. I don't like that... I think it would be great if we were all mean and fighting. I think it would be fun! I got a feeling there's another show coming out where the judges hate each other and I think it's going to be amazing. [Laughs]
Last week, Simon said he hates the song "Tomorrow." Is there a song out there that bothers you in the same way?
Yeah, there's one that really bothers me. I don't even know the name of it. I hate this song so much. But, it's the song that goes, 'and I am telling you.' It's a song that Jennifer Hudson sings it in Dream Girls. Every time somebody gets onstage to sing that song I just think it's some talent show and it gets under my skin. Everybody knows on the panel, as soon as somebody says they're singing that song, it's an automatic no. [The song he's talking about is "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going."]
With Boot Camp coming up this week, do you think Britney Spears and Demi Lovato would've been able to handle Boot Camp as aspiring artists?
Oh yes. I think that both Britney and Demi would've been able to handle it. These girls are really talented and they were trained to work hard. They didn't become a success because they were slackers. Both of them worked really, really hard coming up the ranks.
How do you think this year's contestants stand up against last year's?
I think it's too soon to say because we haven't gotten through the next round yet. We haven't gone through all of the mentoring, so it's a little bit too soon to really say if I think it's better.
What has been your favorite moment working with Britney so far?
The other night a contestant [Nick Youngerman] performed "Ice Ice Baby" and Britney got up and started popping off and I'm telling you that was a moment for me, just watching her get excited, and watching her dance, and just become Britney Spears right before my eyes. It was like magical and I loved it.
What do you think of Khloe Kardashian possibly hosting?
Well, the truth is I don't know anything about who the host may be. There has been nothing announced. I've heard rumors, but I can't confirm, nor can I deny, because I just don't know. Having said that, whoever gets it, it's a wonderful job and I wish them the best. I don't have a clue. I wish I did, honestly, right? I really, really wish I did, but unfortunately, I don't know. Simon hasn't told me what he's thinking. I've been too busy to ask.
If you were going to audition for the show, what would you sing or what's your go-to karaoke song?
If it was me, honey, very simple. I would go up and I would sing "When Doves Cry" by Prince. And I would win. By the way, I would sing it in Boot Camp and would sing it in the finals and I would win. I'd be a one-trick pony and would only do one song, "When Doves Cry."
Over 100 lucky contestants are headed to Boot Camp this week! Tune in this WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY at 8/7c on FOX to see who can stand the pressure.
