It's the job of our very talented judges to weed through the masses who are just trying to have “Justin Bieber as one of our friends.” This year music mogul Simon Cowell is joined by platinum-selling pop princess, Demi Lovato, one third of Destiny's Child, Kelly Rowland, and the Queen of Latin pop, Paulina Rubio.
First up is Chicago native Carlito Olivero. Carlito works at a coffee shop where he throws back six shots of espresso every morning. You'd think Carlito would show up with a caffeine cacophony (look it up!), but the 23-year-old crooner was still able to give off a cool, casual vibe that appealed to our judges and all the ladies in the audience. His sweet rendition of Rihanna's “Stay," had Simon saying, “I actually like everything about you. I like your voice. I like your charisma.” And with four easy yeses, Carlito was whisked into the next round of the competition. Better than a barista tip, eh Carlito?
The joy emanating from Sally Hessnice was palpable, but would her voice match her otherworldly glow? The 55-year-old registered nurse auditioned because “Well, when I sing for people it makes them happy.” Would she make our judges happy? Well, Simon definitely had a smile on his face during her performance of Whitney Houston's “The Greatest Love Of All,” but as it turns out he just couldn't control his giggles. Sally was not dismayed by Cowell cackle. Hell, SHE rated her performance a 10!
The family group, K-Nected, then took the stage and they happened to be horribly dis-K-nected…from reality, that is. Is there a nice way to say this group was no more than a middle-aged woman, an age-inappropriate fashion faux pas, and her two teenage daughters? That was rhetorical, folks.
The splendor of K-Nected was followed by John Tanner Davis, who forever sunk my heart when he butchered Celine Dion's “My Heart Will Go On” from the film Titanic. I think Simon put it best, “John, I think you did a better job than the iceberg, you just killed that song.” Ahhhh, Mr. softee is back!
Next up was Cat Woman. Ok, you'll settle for sexy, Lillie McCloud who stunned our judges and the audience when she announced that her, cat suit laden bod was 54 years young, it had produced three kids, and she was a grandma of seven! The kicker? Man, can she wail! The songstress belted out an emotional rendition of “Alabaster Boy,” causing Kelly and Demi to tear up. Kelly said it best, “Every single part of this room, you touched with your voice.” I will never mock my boss about being 50 ever again. He's sexy too.
And the goods just kept coming with duo, Alex and Sierra. They are in love, they are cute, they are nervous, they are nerds, and they just happen to be extremely unique performers. The pair put a folksy spin on Britney Spear's, “Toxic." Despite the fact that Simon couldn't help rolling his eyes at their love, Alex and Sierra put him in his place. People in glass houses. Just sayin'. Simon “thought it was an incredible version of the song" and Demi exclaimed, “You're so cute together. There's magic.”
The final act of the night was 13-year-old Rion Paige. Rion was born with hands that are curved differently, but that definitely doesn't dampen her light. The young firecracker gave an amazing performance of Carrie Underwood's “Blown Away.” Kelly said, “Rion I just witnessed passion. I think that's what I love the most about it because everything about you is just so incredible.” Simon went even further with his praise exclaiming that Rion was going to go on to do special things with her life and that he's going to “Remember this audition for a long time.”
Well, that is it for the first night of THE X FACTOR Season 3 Premiere! Tune-in tomorrow at 8/7c for part two.
